Gosbert Gottmann
»Vortex«
The series “Vortex” (from the Latin for “whirl” or “eddy”) uses techniques of image disruption, distortion, abstraction, and deformation. But more than in the artist’s earlier work, these images now dissolve into a spectacular frenzy of color.
The world has become even more extreme. Terror and beauty reside in these works, a sense of threat that lucidly illuminates the fears of our time. In Gottmann’s art, this terror is often paired with striking aesthetic pleasure.
Once again, Gottmann presents us with exciting, photography-based mixed-media images that fuse beauty with violence and aggression. These pictures sweep us along emotionally, like in a vortex, as the artist himself explains: “In my series Vortex, the term stands for an extreme movement without an endpoint, a societal transformation marked by intense emotional force.”
